When Art started playing bass in the "Relda Trio" with Vincent van Rooyen and Bryan Jones in 1954,
he was working in a
village by the sea "The Strand." One evening, while walking down the street, he heard someone playing the harmonica, it was then
when he met Johann Kok. Johann had just bought his first
chromatic harmonica. It was obvious to Art that he could use some
help.
Johann quickly catched on and started, just for fun, to play together. Art's time was limited since the Relda Trio was a
well-sought after act in the Western Province.
As years went by Johann and Art drifted apart. Johann was promoted and moved away, while Art moved back to Holland in
1960.
When Art went on his first holiday to South Africa in 2001 he learnt that Johann had moved back to his old home town. It was then that they had a little harmonica reunion. Art had decided to come back to South Africa permanently. It took a while to get all the permits needed to stay in South Africa legally, as a matter of fact he only managed to return in 2004. Plans to get together as an entertaing unit were soon worked out.
Art and Johann played mainly music by South African composers, such as:
Danie Bosman - Jan Pohl - Hendrik Susan - Anton de Waal - Danie Pretorius - Tommy Roering - Kosie La Grange and Tienie Coetzer
at club meetings, retirement homes and other functions.
In 2006 Art planned a tour for the Dutch harmonica trio "The Multicats" in South Africa. Their tour was a great succes.
They played for charity organisations only and were very succesful cashing in for these needy organisations. While on tour,
the "Helderberg Harmonica Trio" joined the "Mulictats" to form a quintet between performances by "The MUlticats."
For convenience they named it "The Harmoniquints."
Below you will find three sound files played by the Harmoniquints during their charity concert for a handicapped workplace
"Aanhouwen" and collected Rand. 12.000,00 at the Somerset West Church Concert Hall.

2006 and '07 were succesful years for the duo. Early in 2008 Johann had a heart attack, followed by a stroke after which
he became disabled, and the future for the "Helderberg Harmonica Duo" looked slim. Soon after, Johann's family found out
that he also had cancer, and soon after became terminal. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his closest family on
Sunday 13 April 2008, at the age of 71.
He will be missed by family and friends. He was my best friend for 54 years.
